Near the end of last year, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams released their 2020 colours of the year.
Not only do we love both of these colours, but we love them both together!
That is why we decided to write about both these colours in the same Decorating Tips article!
Let’s start with Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year, First Light! Benjamin Moore chose the uplifting rosy hue to symbolize the hopeful, happy and fresh start to a new decade. It is a comforting hue that creates a sense of optimism and revitalization. It is the perfect follow-up to the colour grouping that took the later 2010s by storm, Millennial Pink.
First Light can work as both a main and accent colour. It works great as an accent to a whole slew of other colours, such as Sherwin Williams’ 2020 Colour of the Year, but it also works great on all four walls of a room! It can enhance your room, without being overwhelming. While we don’t tend to think of pink as a neutral, this shade could almost be considered the new white, beige or grey!
Sherwin Williams’ colour of the year, Naval, has an approachable confidence to it. There are two sides to this colour. One side is more opulent, empowering and luxurious, while the other side is more calming, quiet and grounded. Naval is partially inspired by the night sky, which many have looked to, to give them guidance and remind them to live more mindfully.
Similarly to First Light, Naval can either play a starring role, or it could be used for background support. While it can work as a great accent colour, it can also be considered a new neutral. Naval is a colour that can be used a backdrop for many different design aesthetics, including industrial, coastal, contemporary and farmhouse. It is a versatile colour that can be used to invoke wellness, luxury and calmness into your interior.
At Bennett’s you can find many furniture and accessory items in these colour tones, or you can customize a piece to feature your favourite fabrics and patterns in one or both of these colours!
This sofa features a fabric with the First Light hues in it. While First Light can be used as an accent, this traditional sofa acts very much as a neutral. That is part of the reason we decided to bring some blue tones into the décor with accessories such as a throw and vases.
This vignette features many blue tones, including some very similar to Naval. While these pieces would work great with neutrals such as white and grey, you could also add a pop of colour such as millennial pink or burnt orange.
For our final vignette, we wanted to
feature both colours of the year, First Light
and Naval. Both of the colours can be paired
with a wide variety of other colours, but we
personally love them together. We have pulled
fabrics with both of these colours to create a
contemporary traditional feel.
Not only do these two colours of the year work well together from a design standpoint, but their symbolic meanings also
complement each other incredibly well. Together with First Light and Naval, you’ll be bringing optimism, comfort,
confidence and luxury into your interior. Revitalize your space in the new decade with empowerment and authenticity,
and let’s not forget, style.
