1926 Inspired Mood Boards

Canadian, family owned, and dedicated to superior customer service, Bennett’s Furniture and Mattresses is celebrating its 94th Anniversary this year!

Have you ever wondered what shoppers might have seen in the store on opening day?

Is your home ready for an update with classic inspiration?

Kathryn Harris-Lowe, Bennett’s Advertising Associate and Interior Decorator, has compiled 4 gorgeous mood boards inspired by the home fashions of 1926, the year Bennett’s opened. Keep in mind, Kathryn has used items available at or orderable from Bennett’s to create these boards! You are seeing modern furniture and fabrics that are all available right now in 2020. (Please note: items were in stock and current at time mood boards were created. We cannot guarantee availability. Some items may be special order. Please check with your Decorator Consultant as to current availability.)

First she takes us through a bedroom:

Note the dark solid wood construction of the bed, dresser and nightstand. The four post, traditional style bed of yesterday is still desired today. Check out the detail in the woodworking! Floral prints, which are super hot in 2020, were also featured in 1926. Did you notice that even the colours are back in style? Warm sunset tones and cool sea hues are displayed. Kathryn’s bedroom also shows the repeating geometrics in her fabrics, that we would have seen in carpets, curtains and wallpapers back in the day. A Monet-inspired landscape in the artwork is still considered as gorgeous today as it was last century. Ornate accessories with a touch of glam would make the utilitarian mirror and lamp seem luxurious as this home-owner puts the day to rest in their bedroom.

Next Kathryn shows us a dining room:

The farmhouse style dining set is still a star. While darker woods are still in style, we are currently favouring a lighter shade of wood. The server she displays is almost identical to the period pieces. This one is Canadian-made and of the highest quality! Today servers pop up all over the house, not just the dining room. We see them in entrance ways and home offices too! Candleholders are still a sought after accessory for home decorators. Kathryn shows the round mirrors that were the rage in 1926 and still hanging around... (Get it? Hanging around?) Florals are featured in shades of sage, ivory, and butter yellow. An oriental-inspired rug is a true classic- now and then.

Kathryn’s third mood board shows us inspiration plucked from a roaring '20’s living room:

Check out the colours! Rich jewel tones that are very in style this coming season, were also a hit back in the '20s. With the mirrored cabinets, winged arm chairs, wooden side tables with ornate features, Kathryn shows us what is old is still new. What our forefathers wanted, comfort and quality that is pleasing to the eye and wallet, is what you’ll still find at Bennett’s!

For her final board, Kathryn drew inspiration from a 1926 Sun Porch:

Really, this could be any room in the house, a family room, or even a home office. She features the bright florals, again with the sunset and sea colours. We have the dark wood furniture with intricate craftsmanship and classic details. The round mirror, and other hits of glitz and geometrics from are inspired from Art Deco style, which was all the rage in the 1920s. She even has a chairside table that would suit another popular 1920s style, Arts & Crafts style.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these recreations. It’s felt like we were designing a movie set for a 1920’s film while doing this!
